India is a home for four out of the eight species of bears, namely, Asiatic Black bear, Himalayan Brown bear, Sloth bear and Malayan Sun bear. Three out of these four Indian bear species are listed as Vulnerable in IUCN Redlist and needs attention and conservation actions. The National Bear Conservation Network (NBCN) is a joint initiative by Wildlife and Conservation Biology (WCB) Research Foundation, India and IUCN -SSC Bear Specialist Group (BSG) to promote science-based conservation of Indian bear species as well as conservation and nationwide community awareness about the bears of India. We invite all the conservation professionals, bear biologists, forest managers and wildlife enthusiasts to join this network and contribute in conservation of bears in India.

Objectives of NBCN

  • Establish a nationwide network of bear biologists: This network will facilitate communication and collaboration among researchers across India.
  • Promote scientific research on bears: The NBCN will encourage and support research on all the species of bears in India.
  • Raise awareness about bears: The network will work to educate the people about the importance of bear conservation and the threats bears face.
  • Assist policymakers in bear habitat management: The NBCN will provide scientific data and assist policymakers for the conservation and management of bear habitats and policies and practices to mitigate human-bear conflicts.
